*A Century or Two ago, trees were cut manually with axes, and then hefty beams and boards were cut from the timbers. A similar process was used for most of the homesteads back in those day, these beams and boards were used to build houses, barns, outbuildings, and sheds. Then the buildings were built using the tried and true mortise and tenon system, therefore many of the buildings stood for a century or more.
Today, as these building continue to age, some are completely restored to their original state, while others are disassembled piece by piece, of which the purpose would be, so that the precious natural resource, the wood, can be restored, and used as reclaimed wood, often called barnwood.
When the reclaimed wood is disassembled it is hauled to a lumber handling yard where it undergoes a cleaning and drying process. All the lumber is run under a metal detector twice where the nails are marked, and then removed, the wood is then stacked for drying.
After the drying process the wood is then kiln dried to 7% moisture and also to exterminate any bugs and insects, which moves the lumber closer to being useable for handcrafted reclaimed barn wood furniture.
This process of reclaiming the barn wood is an excellent green way to preserve the old and vintage and to also give this precious natural resource-wood-a second life.
